Brigade shakes up its roster after opening loss
By TEREZ A. PAYLOR
The Kansas City Star

The Brigade didn’t waste any time making changes after Saturday’s 51-49 loss to Tampa Bay in its Arena Football League season opener.

The Brigade signed veteran defensive lineman Gillis Wilson and placed receiver Boo Williams and defensive lineman Neil Purvis on recallable waivers Monday.

Williams and Purvis will become free agents if no team claims them or the Brigade cannot trade them within 24 hours. If either player is claimed, the Brigade will have another 24 hours to either pull him back, trade him or release him.

Wilson, a 6-foot-2, 285-pound defensive lineman who played eight games with the Brigade in 2006, had 1 1/2 sacks last season with Grand Rapids.

“Gillis is a guy who is a big pass rusher, he brings some experience and he fits into what we are doing,” Brigade coach Kevin Porter said.

Wilson will start at defensive end in place of Jerry Turner, who moves to “mac” linebacker because of the loss of starter Chris Avery. Avery was placed on injured reserve after he injured a wrist in Saturday’s game, and he won’t be eligible to return until April.

Williams, 28, struggled with injuries last year but caught 45 passes for 473 yards and 17 touchdowns in his first Arena League season. Though he was active in Saturday’s game, he didn’t catch any passes.

“We are very deep at wideout, and sometimes there are not enough footballs to go around,” Porter said.

Purvis had 3 1/2 tackles and no sacks last season.
