College news: Nebraska unveils Pelini contract details
Pelini’s deal done
New Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini’s contract is for five years and pays a base salary of $1.1 million annually. Pelini was hired Dec. 2, and worked out general terms of the contract with athletic director Tom Osborne several weeks ago. But it wasn’t signed by all parties until this week.
Park forward honored
Park University junior forward Jon Meriweather was named the NAIA Division I men’s basketball national player of the week. The 6-foot-8 Meriweather, an alum of St. Pius X, averaged 28 points, 12.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks in two wins last week. Meriweather is the son of 10-year NBA veteran Joe C. Meriweather.
Longhorn to skip track season
Texas’ Destinee Hooker, the two-time defending NCAA high jump champion, will skip track this season to train with the U.S. women’s national volleyball team before the Olympics. Hooker is a standout hitter on the Texas volleyball team that advanced to the regional finals of the NCAA tournament. She and volleyball teammates Juliann Faucette and Lauren Paolini were among a group invited to train with Team USA and compete for a spot on the roster for international play.
Hooker won the NCAA outdoor high jump as a freshman and sophomore. She will have two years of track eligibility when she returns to Texas.
KU makes Bowen’s promotion official
KU made official Wednesday what The Star reported on Monday — Clint Bowen will replace Bill Young as defensive coordinator. Bowen, who spent the past two years as co-defensive coordinator, is one of the country’s youngest coordinators at 35.
“Clint has played a big role in the success of our defense,” coach Mark Mangino said. “He has great rapport with the players and is an outstanding teacher of schemes and fundamentals. There is no doubt Clint will continue to develop our defense.”
Young took the job as defensive coordinator at Miami last week.
Ball State coach gets settlement
Former Ball State basketball coach Ronny Thompson will get $200,000 as part of his settlement with the university. Ball State released terms of the settlement on Wednesday. Thompson, who resigned in July amid allegations of racial harassment, also received an apology from the university last month.
In return, Thompson agreed to waive all claims he may have against the university and that nothing in the settlement constitutes an admission of liability or illegality by either party.
