Five schools on the spot for Signing Day
By Tom Dienhart - SportingNews
There are less than 24 hours before Signing Day. The clock is ticking. Can you hear it?
These schools can. I present the five schools most on the spot; the five which will be sweating the most as they anxiously await the arrival of signed letters of intent on Wednesday.
Good luck. Your recruiting fortunes are in the balance. That's all.
5 ON THE SPOT
Alabama. Nick Saban knows Xs and Os, but he knows recruiting even better. A great recruiting haul would be a nice salve to what was an uneven debut for Saban. And it may happen. Check it out: With a fast finish, the Crimson Tide has a chance to finish with the top class -- a group that already is headed by OLs Tyler Love and ATH Burton Scott -- in America. All eyes will be on star wideout Julio Jones. Will he choose the Tide?
Michigan. Rich Rodriguez has done a good job building a strong class, headed by the likes of DB Boubacar Cissoko, RB Terrence Robinson and WR Darryl Stonum. Getting DE Nick Perry would be huge. But it all won't matter because of this one simple fact: If the Wolverines don't land QB Terrelle Pryor, Big Blue is in big trouble for the next few years. Never before has one recruit meant so much to a school. Sorry, but it's true. Worst case scenario: Pryor chooses Ohio State. If that happens, Rich Rod may want to go back to West Virginia. Hayes: History shows why Pryor is so important
Tennessee. True, the Vols didn't have a lot of scholarships to offer. But aside from TE Aaron Douglas, LB Marlon Walls and LB Gerald Williams, the players they have lined up aren't elite-caliber. Not even a fast finish figures to salvage what looks like the worst class in the Phillip Fulmer era. Still, it sure would help to get stud LB Jerrell Harris.
Texas. This is a strong class headed by a lot of good defensive backs, including Nolan Brewster, D.J. Monroe and Aaron Williams. But it has a chance to be one of Mack Brown's best hauls if Darrell Scott chooses the Longhorns. How good is Scott? He's considered by many to be the nation's top running back. Colorado also wants him badly. How can Scott turn down Brown's charm and the chance to be a star on one of college football's biggest stages?
USC. Few schools are waiting word from as many blue-chippers as the Trojans, who typically always finish fast. If guys like DB T.J. Bryant or Harris sign on Wednesday to join the likes of OLs Matt Kalil and Tyron Smith, this will be another banner haul for Pete Carroll. By the way: USC already has a commitment from the top player in next year's class: QB Matt Barkley of Santa Ana, Calif., who goes to the same high school (Mater Dei) as Matt Leinart and Colt Brennan. Yeah, it's good to be USC.
