Favre appears ready to return
January 10, 2008
GULFPORT, Mississippi (Ticker) - Brett Favre appears ready to put off retirement for yet another year.
In an interview with the Sun Herald published Thursday, the Green Bay Packers quarterback indicated he would be back for an 18th season.
"Each week, I bring more stress on myself wondering if this is too good to be true," Favre said as he looked forward to Saturday's playoff meeting with Seattle. "I want to continue the streak and winning. When I talk about the streak, it's not the (consecutive) starts; it's the hot streak we are on. Then, I ask what can I do better?
Favre has started 253 consecutive regular-season games for the Packers, a streak that dates to September 27, 1992.
"I am trying to enjoy it because this could be my last game in Green Bay," Favre added. "For the first time in three years, I haven't thought this could be my last game. I would like to continue longer."
Favre, 38, has flirted with retirement during the past two offseasons. Many expected him to call it quits after a disappointing 2006 season, but Favre saw encouraging signs in the Packers' rebuilding and said he wanted to return.
His decision has been justified by an outstanding season. Favre led a young Packers team to a 13-3 record, throwing for 4,155 yards and 28 touchdowns. His quarterback rating of 95.7 was his best in 11 seasons.
During the course of the season Favre has broken three NFL records, becoming the all-time leading in passing yards (61,655 yards), touchdown passes (442), and career wins (160).
"I have a lot to think about," Favre added. "It's been a fun year and winning has made it a good year. For the first time in a couple of years, at this point, my focus is solely on Seattle and winning a playoff game at home."
The only three-time MVP in NFL history, Favre is the all-time leader with 5,377 career completions. He has made eight Pro Bowl appearances and is set to make his ninth on February 10.
