Browns extend Crennel’s contract for two more years
The Associated Press
CLEVELAND | Willie McGinest always believed Romeo Crennel would turn the Cleveland Browns into winners.
For a long time, though, it seemed like the veteran linebacker was about the only one who did.
“There was a lot of prejudgment about Romeo,” said McGinest, who played for Crennel in New England. “And it was really unfair.”
The 60-year-old former defensive assistant, whose future in Cleveland was shaky after two forgettable seasons, signed a two-year contract extension on Tuesday with the Browns, who won 10 games in Crennel’s third season and finally appear repaired.
Crennel had two years remaining on the five-year deal he signed in February of 2005. The extension, believed to be worth about $4 million per season, takes Crennel through 2011.
The Browns were one of the NFL’s surprise teams in 2007. One season after going 4-12, they went 10-6, won a franchise-record seven home games and only missed the AFC playoffs because of a tie-breaker.
Crennel’s extension was not a surprise. General manager Phil Savage was pleased with Crennel’s performance and immediately following the season said the club would reward the coach’s efforts.

•PAY UP: Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens lost his grievance against the Philadelphia Eagles and owes the team about $769,120 for the 2005 season when he was suspended by the team. The Eagles were trying to recover $1.725 million of the $2.3 million signing bonus it paid Owens when he signed a seven-year deal in 2004. The team recovered $955,880 by withholding his final five paychecks when he was kicked off the team.
•OUT OF IT: Southern California coach Pete Carroll met with Washington owner Daniel Snyder in St. Louis shortly after Joe Gibbs retired earlier this year. But neither side pursued a deal.
•BACK IN: Baltimore re-hired Rex Ryan as the team’s assistant head coach and defensive coordinator. Ryan had interviewed for the head coaching spot.
•TO LONDON: The Chargers and Saints are expected to be the teams selected to play each other in London this fall in the NFL’s second regular-season game to be played outside North America.
•HOUSTON HIRE: Former Eagles and Packers head coach Ray Rhodes was hired to coach defensive backs for the Houston Texans
