College football buzz: More All-America honors
More All-America honors
Kansas cornerback Aqib Talib, KU offensive tackle Anthony Collins, Kansas State wide receiver Jordy Nelson, Missouri tight end Martin Rucker and MU return specialist Jeremy Maclin were all picked for the Football Writers Association of America’s All-America team.
KU and Missouri were two of four teams, joining Arkansas and LSU, landing two players on the team.
Delaware headed to I-AA final
Joe Flacco threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns, helping No. 13 Delaware edge fourth-ranked Southern Illinois 20-17 on Saturday and advance to the NCAA Division I-AA title game.
The Blue Hens, 11-3, will play Appalachian State on Friday in the title game. The Mountaineers moved to within a victory of their third-straight national championship by ousting Richmond 55-35 on Friday night.
Southern Illinois, which finished 12-2, was led by John Randle, a former Kansas running back. Randle had 129 yards rushing and one touchdown.
Valdosta wins in Division II
Maurice Leggett’s interception in the end zone with less than a minute left preserved Valdosta State’s 28-24 victory over previously unbeaten California University of Pennsylvania in an NCAA Division II semifinal Saturday in California, Pa.
The Blazers, 12-1, will play Northwest Missouri game for the national championship at 11 a.m. next Saturday in Florence, Ala.
Valdosta trailed 24-21 after before it capped off a five-play, 60-yard drive with Wille Copeland’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Zach Parker with 3:13 remaining in the game.
Leggett then picked off Ruggiero on a second-and-goal play, sealing the win.
Navy promotes assistant
Navy wasted little time finding a new football coach, promoting assistant Ken Niumatalolo on Saturday to replace Paul Johnson, who left one day earlier to take over at Georgia Tech.
Niumatalolo, 42, will coach the Midshipmen against Utah in the Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 20.
The decision was easy, given that athletic director Chet Gladchuk wanted a coach who would continue Johnson’s potent triple-option offense.
“I have observed our program over the past six years and I attribute a large part of our success to the invaluable role Ken has played as the assistant head coach,” Gladchuk said.
Niumatalolo had two coaching stints at Navy for 10 seasons, including the last six, when he was assistant head coach and offensive line coach. The Midshipmen went 45-29 the last six seasons.
“It’s an honor and a privilege to be named head football coach at the Naval Academy,” Niumatalolo said. “I am in the process of putting together a coaching staff that will give us every opportunity to continue the winning tradition at the Naval Academy.”
