The names of Belfonte and Temple showed up repeatedly for the Hawklets in their 28-9 victory over Mehlville in the Edward Jones Dome. This time it was the younger brothers time in the limelight. Sal Belfonte, younger brother of David Belfonte, The Star’s 2005 All-Metro football Player of the Year, was a sparkplug for Rockhurst. He returned a punt for a touchdown, returned a kick to the Mehlville 15 and intercepted a pass. The kickoff he returned to the 15 at the start of the second half led to a 15-yard touchdown run by Drew Temple, the younger brother of Tony Temple, The Star’s 2004 All-Metro football Player of the Year. See a pattern here? Following the game, Rockhurst coach Tony Severino said at least 60 players on the team had a brother, father or uncle play for the Hawklets. “They go home and listen to all the stories,” Severino said. “They won’t let (themselves) not be as good as they were. That’s a big part of it.” As for the future, Severino hopes the football tradition continues at Rockhurst. “Hopefully these guys will have their kids come to Rockhurst and play some day, too,” he said of Belfonte, Temple and quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase. The football state title was the eighth for Rockhurst. It serves to put an exclamation point on an already successful fall for the school’s athletic department. The Hawklets also won state titles in boys soccer and boys swimming.
