He became a free agent on Dec. 12 when the Royals decided to not offer him a 2008 contract. Brown was originally drafted by the A's in the sixth round in 1994 and spent three years in their Minor League system. He was then selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1996 Rule 5 Draft and spent the entire 1997 season with them in the Majors. After that he bounced back and forth between the Pirates and the Minors until being traded to the San Diego Padres in 2001. After moving around the Minors for three years, he surfaced with Kansas City in 2005 and led the Royals in RBIs for three straight seasons. Last year Brown batted just .257 but hit .317 against left-handed pitchers, a fact that attracted the A's. He also hit .316 with runners in scoring position, and recorded 62 RBIs. thingy Kaegel is a reporter for MLB.com. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.
