Royals, Tomko agree to terms on one-year deal

The Kansas City Star
The Royals and veteran pitcher Brett Tomko agreed to terms Sunday on a one-year contract worth $3 million plus incentives.
The deal will likely be made official today, assuming Tomko passes a routine physical. Once finalized, signing Tomko would address the team’s primary remaining need of a seasoned arm to add to the Royals’ group of rotation candidates.
Tomko was 4-12 with a 5.55 ERA in 40 appearances — 19 of them starts — for the Dodgers and Padres last season. He was designated for assignment by the Dodgers last August, then was signed by the Padres and went 2-1 with a 4.61 ERA in a pennant race.
Tomko, who will turn 35 on April 7, is 93-92 with a 4.62 ERA in 11 seasons with the Reds, Mariners, Padres, Cardinals, Giants and Dodgers. This would be Tomko’s first time in the American League since 2001.
Gil Meche, Brian Bannister and Zack Greinke are looked at as sure things for the Royals rotation. Tomko will likely compete for one of the final two spots, along with Kyle Davies, Jorge De La Rosa, Luke Hochevar and Luke Hudson. John Bale will also be given a chance at the rotation, and the Royals also signed Brian Lawrence and Hideo Nomo to minor-league deals.
Acquiring Tomko is something of a backup plan after the Royals failed to sign Hiroki Kuroda of Japan despite a competitive offer. Kuroda signed with the Dodgers.
The Royals’ search for a veteran starter at one point focused on Jon Lieber before he signed with the Cubs last week.
The A’s, Astros, Nationals, Reds and Rockies were among the other teams with reported interest in Tomko.

The Denver Post reported that Colorado and Tulowitzki have agreed to parameters of a six-year, $30 million contract, which would be the largest extension ever given to a major-league player with less than two years experience.
•REPORT ON AFFELDT: Foxsports.com and The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that former Royals pitcher Jeremy Affeldt has agreed to a one-year contact with the Cincinnati Reds.
