Royals GM says Teahen and DeJesus need to produce this year
By JEFFREY FLANAGAN
The addition of Jose Guillen could provide the Royals’ offense with the big-bopper element it has been lacking for some time.
But truth be told, what the Royals need more than anything is a big year out of two key players: David DeJesus and Mark Teahen.
Royals general manager Dayton Moore agrees.
“Both of those players really need to emerge, and we fully believe they will,” Moore told me. “They both have the potential to be All-Stars.
“David has the most consistent swing on the team. He hangs in there against left-handers. He’s an on-base guy. He’s a guy we feel could get 200 hits.
“Mark is someone we feel is a 20-homer guy who can score 100 runs in the middle of the lineup. He hit 17 homers in a partial season two years ago. We know he’s capable. He also may be the best on the team at getting to his top speed the quickest. He can turn a lot of singles into doubles.”
Moore knows that Alex Gordon and Billy Butler are simply too talented not to be great hitters one day. Whether that comes this year or down the road is anyone’s guess.
But the time is now for DeJesus and Teahen to have their breakthrough years, which is crucial to the Royals plans.
“I do feel much better about the offense at this time than I did a year ago,” Moore said. “We can see the potential for production and scoring if the pieces fall into place.”
Super Bowl ads
Word is that Fox has received about $2.7 million per 30-second advertising spot for the Super Bowl.
A 30-second ad for the first Super Bowl cost about $42,000.
Lenny is No. 25
ESPN.com recently ranked the top quarterback performances in the Super Bowl, and Len Dawson’s winning effort over the Vikings came in at No. 25. Lenny the Cool was 12 of 17 for 142 yards and one touchdown in the 23-7 win.
“While the numbers look rather pedestrian, Dawson’s game management was impeccable,” ESPN.com wrote.
In Super Bowl I, Dawson’s 16-of-27, one-touchdown, one-interception performance in the 35-10 loss to the Packers ranked 42nd. The magazine wrote: “Dawson put up decent numbers, but the Chiefs failed to score in the second half en route to a decisive loss.
Joe Montana’s performance in the 1990 Super Bowl — 22 of 29 for 297 yards and five touchdowns — was No. 1.
Mangino watch
