It’s safe to buy those Gordon and Butler jerseys now
Royals fans can expect to see Alex Gordon and Billy Butler as staples of the Royals’ lineup for years to come.
And now Royals fans can bank on what uniform numbers Gordon and Butler will be wearing during those years. (In other words, it’s OK to start buying those souvenir jerseys now.)
Butler, who wore No. 21 last season, has switched permanently to No. 16. Gordon, who wore No. 7 last season, will wear No. 4.
“(Butler) will wear No. 16 because it has been his favorite number since he started playing ball,” said Mike Swanson, Royals vice president of communications. “He was just hoping for the opportunity to wear it at some point with us, and with Reggie (Sanders) being gone, here’s his chance.”
Gordon pounced on a similar opportunity to grab his favorite, No. 4, which had been worn by Angel Berroa. Berroa is no longer on the 40-man roster and is therefore unable to stake a claim to any number.
Ross Gload will now wear No. 7. Catcher Miguel Olivo has grabbed No. 21.
Oh, and it turns out that the Royals will not be retiring Emil Brown’s No. 35. Outfielder Mitch Maier has snatched that number up.
WHB romps
One would guess that KCSP can’t wait to reap some of the Arbitron benefits from having Royals games this season.
The fall Arbitron ratings came out recently, and once again rival WHB romped to an easy across-the-board win over KCSP for the demographic of men aged 25-54.
Here are the numbers:
•In the early morning, WHB’s Steven St. John and Nate Bukaty posted an 8.6 share to KCSP’s Damon Amendolara’s 4.7 share. That was DA’s final ratings book with KCSP before he was let go. He actually fared better than his summer share of 3.2.
•WHB’s “Crunch Time” with Frank Boal, Dave Stewart and Kevin Harlan jumped up to a 10.0 share in the fall (7.2 in the summer). That beat KCSP’s Tim Grunhard, who posted a 3.6 share in his final book with the station.
•WHB’s Soren Petro easily beat syndicated Jim Rome on KCSP, 9.3 to 2.6.
•And WHB’s Kevin Kietzman romped over KCSP’s Marty Wall and Neal Jones, 9.7 to 2.9.
Talib first round?
NFL Network draft expert Mike Mayock ranks the top 20 prospects for the upcoming draft and apparently is ga-ga over Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan, ranking him No. 1.
Mayock ranks Kansas defensive back Aqib Talib as the 16th-best prospect overall and the third-best defensive back in the draft.
