College Buzz: Consensus All-American picks
Consensus All-Americans picked
The NCAA consensus All-America football team features players at each position who totaled the most points (three points for first team, two for second, one for third) from the five primary organizations that choose All-Americans. Missouri all-purpose player Jeremy Maclin, Kansas State wide receiver Jordy Nelson, Missouri tight end Martin Rucker and Kansas defensive back Aqib Talib made the 28-man consensus All-America team.
MU suspends receiver Bracey
Reserve receiver Greg Bracey’s football career at Missouri appears to be over. Bracey, a seldom-used senior wide receiver, has been suspended for the Tigers’ Cotton Bowl game against Arkansas. MU coach Gary Pinkel confirmed that action Monday morning, citing “disciplinary reasons” for the move.
Bracey caught three passes this season for 53 yards, none since the fourth nonconference game against Western Illinois, though Bracey played in 11 of MU’s 13 games in an 11-2 season.
Bracey caught two passes, including one for 37 yards and a touchdown, against Ole Miss in the second game of the season.
Cats get football commitments
Not a bad day in football recruiting for Kansas State. The Wildcats received two high-profile commitments Monday. Dual-threat quarterback Chris Harper from Wichita Northwest High School made an oral commitment to K-State at a news conference in Wichita.
Harper, 6 feet 2, 231 pounds, is the No. 2-ranked player in the state by Rivals.com. He completed 73 percent of his passes as a senior. He also rushed for 600 yards.
K-State also received a commitment from junior-college wide receiver Aubrey Quarles from Santa Rosa, Calif. Quarles (6-2, 190) is rated the No. 19 junior-college player by Rivals. Quarles, who runs a 4.4-second 40-yard dash, also had offers from California and Minnesota.
K-State missed out on the top-ranked player in Kansas. Wichita East High linebacker Arthur Brown, who recently eliminated the Wildcats from his list, chose Miami.
Kansas lands safety
Three-star safety Lubbock Smith, a native of Dallas, gave an oral commitment to Kansas on Monday.
Smith attends the same high school — Dallas Carter — as current KU freshman center Jeremiah Hatch. Smith chose KU over Tennessee, Arkansas and Tulsa. He is the 15th commitment in the 2008 class.
Pelini adds to staff
Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini says he’s filled out his staff of eight assistants, who all have Big 12 experience. He said Monday that he’s selected a running-backs coach but won’t release his name until the coach has finished his duties for his current team’s bowl game. The hires are Barney Cotton as offensive-line coach, Shawn Watson as offensive coordinator, Ted Gilmore as receivers coach and recruiting coordinator and Ron Brown as tight-ends coach.
Watson and Gilmore are holdovers from the Bill Callahan staff. Carl Pelini will be defensive coordinator and line coach, Mike Ekeler will be linebackers coach, John Papuchis will be defensive-ends coach, and Marvin Sanders will coach the secondary.
Terry Bowden interested in West Virginia
Former Auburn coach Terry Bowden (left) is interested in taking over his hometown team, West Virginia.
Bowden grew up in Morgantown when his father, Bobby, was West Virginia coach and played for the Mountaineers.
