A total of 5,000 commemorative footballs recapping Kansas’ 11-1 season are on sale with a portion of the proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish foundations of Kansas and Missouri. The football and display case cost $99, and fans can order at 800-345-2868 or at www.nikcosports.com.
Ball State apologizes to former coach
Ball State apologized to former basketball coach Ronny Thompson after an outside review found “unprofessional behavior” by an employee tainted the school’s report to the NCAA on possible rules violations.
The university said Wednesday the school and Thompson, a son of Hall of Fame coach John Thompson, “mutually resolved their differences.” Ronny Thompson resigned in July after a 9-22 record in his lone season with the Cardinals.
The school did not mention a financial settlement in its statement, and Ball State vice president for marketing and communications Tony Proudfoot did not to answer directly when asked whether there was one. He said the news media were welcome to submit an open records request to the university.
Rhode Island hires football coach
Rutgers associate football coach Darren Rizzi has been hired as coach at Rhode Island. Rizzi, a former tight end at Rhode Island, replaces Tim Stowers, who was fired last month after one winning season in eight years. Rizzi, 37, agreed to a five-year deal with a base pay of $160,000.
Falcons coach joins South Carolina staff
Atlanta Falcons linebackers coach Brian VanGorder will take over as defensive coordinator at South Carolina. VanGorder will replace Tyrone Nix, who became the defensive coordinator at Mississippi earlier this month.
VanGorder came to the Falcons this season with head coach Bobby Petrino, who quit last week, 13 games into his first season to take over at Arkansas.
UMKC adds to tennis coaching staff
Dante Cipulli has joined the UMKC tennis program as an assistant coach. Cipulli joins the Kangaroos after serving as a graduate assistant coach at Southwest Baptist from 2005-07.
O’Reilly family donates to new Drury arena
The family that founded O’Reilly Automotive is donating $6 million for a new basketball arena and event center at Drury University in Springfield. Fundraising continues for the rest of the $12 million price tag, but groundbreaking is scheduled for this spring. The O’Reilly Family Event Center is expected to open in fall 2009.
The center will have over 4,000 seats, including skyboxes. It will replace Drury’s 1940s arena. University officials hope to compete for regional and national tournaments.
