Tonight's bowl games
Papajohns.com Bowl
Southern Mississippi (7-5) vs. Cincinnati (9-3)
•WHEN/TV: Noon, ESPN2
•WHERE: At Birmingham, Ala.
•WHAT TO WATCH: These guys were in the same conference until a few years ago. The Bearcats have grown in the Big East and flirted with a league title this surprising season. Quarterback Ben Mauk, a Wake Forest transfer, led the resurgence. If coach Jeff Bower is to go out a winner in his final game at Southern Miss, running back Damion Fletcher and linebacker Gerald McRath must come up big.
New Mexico Bowl
New Mexico (8-4) vs. Nevada (6-6)
•WHEN/TV: 3:30 p.m., ESPN
•WHERE: At Albuquerque, N.M.
•WHAT TO WATCH: For the second straight year the Lobos play a bowl game in their home stadium, and this time they’ll try to get it right. New Mexico fell to San Jose State in this spot a year ago. The Lobos were 5-1 at home with the loss to a solid BYU team. The Wolf Pack’s Luke Lippincott (1,380 yards) is the WAC’s top running back, but counterpart Rodney Ferguson (1,177) is suspended for academic woes. The game’s top NFL prospect is Nevada linebacker Ezra Butler.
Las Vegas Bowl
UCLA (6-6) vs. Brigham Young (10-2)
•WHEN/TV: 7 p.m., ESPN
•WHERE: At Las Vegas
•WHAT TO WATCH: UCLA interim coach DeWayne Walker used to be on the BYU staff. He was Pete Carroll’s first hire at Southern California and probably will be a head coach some day. This is a rematch, as the Bruins won the regular-season game 27-17. The seasons went in opposite directions after that, when UCLA tanked and the Cougars soared. Bruins quarterback Ben Olson, a former BYU player, might not play because of a knee injury.
•KC CONNECTION: UCLA senior cornerback Trey Brown, who played at Blue Valley Northwest, leads the Bruins with five interceptions.
