www.kansascity.com/166/story/454831.htmlKU promoting Bowen to defensive coordinatorBy J. BRADY McCOLLOUGH The Kansas City Star LAWRENCE | The Kansas football team didn’t look far to find its new defensive coordinator. KU safeties coach and co-defensive coordinator Clint Bowen will take over for Bill Young, a source told The Star. An official announcement is expected later this week. After Young accepted the defensive coordinator position at Miami on Thursday, Bowen immediately became the logical choice to take over. He’ll have some big shoes to fill; Young was a finalist for the Frank Broyles Award, given annually to the nation’s top assistant, for his work with the KU defense in 2007. The good news for Bowen is that he’ll coach a group that is returning nine starters and 10 backups from a unit that finished No. 12 in total defense nationally. Certainly, nobody can say that Bowen hasn’t put in his time at Kansas. He joined the KU staff as a graduate assistant in 1998 and, beginning in 2001, spent five seasons as the special teams coordinator (he also coached tight ends, running backs and safeties during that span). Bowen was promoted to co-defensive coordinator in February 2006, the first sign that he was being groomed for the defensive coordinator position. Bowen is truly homegrown. A Lawrence native and graduate of Lawrence High, he played defensive back for KU during the 1992 and 1993 seasons and graduated from the school in ’95. During his senior year, he led the Jayhawks in tackles with 114.
