CHIEFS NOTES: Croyle to start in Denver
Croyle looks ready
The Chiefs declared Brodie Croyle to be their starting quarterback for Sunday’s game at Denver after he practiced for the second straight day.
“The last two days, everything has gone pretty well,” said Croyle, who took a knee to the back two weeks ago against Oakland and missed last week’s game against San Diego. “I’m ready to get back out there and get playing.”
There’s a possibility of snow in Denver for Sunday’s game. That would be a test for Croyle, born and raised in Alabama.
“Let’s see — this was the third career snow in my life,” he said. “The game two weeks ago was the coldest game I ever played.
“If it’s snowing, it will be fine. I was telling Damon (Huard) earlier that I hope it’s snowing because it’s fun to play a snow game.”
Greene in, Thigpen out
The season of reserve quarterback Tyler Thigpen ended when the Chiefs placed him on the injured-reserve list. Thigpen tore the medial collateral ligament in a knee during practice on Wednesday. He won’t need surgery and should be available when the Chiefs begin offseason practices in the spring.
Left with only Croyle and Huard at quarterback on the active roster, the Chiefs signed David Greene to their practice squad. The left-handed Greene was a third-round pick by Seattle in 2005. He spent time with the Seahawks in 2005 and 2006 and was on New England’s practice squad for a time this season.
Greene played in college at Georgia and has the most victories by a quarterback in Division I-A history after leading the Bulldogs to 42 wins.
Offensive lineman added
Faced with mounting injuries on the offensive line, the Chiefs filled the void on their active roster by promoting Tre Stallings from their practice squad. Stallings was drafted by the Chiefs in the sixth round last year but never played in a game and was released after training camp this summer.
The Chiefs would prefer to dress eight offensive linemen for games, but they may have only seven healthy bodies at those positions on Sunday because of injuries to Kyle Turley and Damion McIntosh.
If neither Turley nor McIntosh is available Sunday, the only line reserves would be Stallings and rookie Herb Taylor. Neither has played on offense in a regular-season game.
One back, one not
Chris Terry, who missed practice Wednesday after the death of his mother, returned to work Thursday. The Chiefs expect him to start at right tackle Sunday.
Derrick Johnson did not practice, and the Chiefs don’t expect him to be at work today. He planned to attend his father’s funeral in Texas on Saturday, join the Chiefs in Denver that night and play on Sunday.
“It will be (difficult),” coach Herm Edwards said. “We had a long talk, and he feels this is what he needs to do for a lot of different reasons.”
Injury update
McIntosh (knee), Turley (foot and back) and Donnie Edwards (hamstring) did not practice, increasing the chances they won’t be available to play Sunday. Greg Wesley (knee and head) returned to practice. Larry Johnson again practiced in individual drills but will not play against the Broncos.
