How bad was it? Just listen to the broadcasters
Are these the Chiefs retro 1980s?
The Chiefs’ broadcasters seemed to think so after Denver pasted Kansas City on Sunday, a result that was not all that unpredictable, though.
“Well, I’ve been covering the Chiefs since 1981. Leonard (Dawson), you and I have seen some bad football in the 1980s. I would have to say this is as bad a football as it was then. It is total domination (by Denver). You got to go back to 1987 and 1988, the Frank Gansz years.”
| Bob Gretz, Chiefs Radio Network, KCFX, on the present Chiefs team
“Yes.”
| Dawson, Chiefs Radio Network, KCFX
JF: This was as depressed as the Chiefs’ radio crew has been in a long, long time. Gretz and Dawson couldn’t believe their eyes, watching a so-so Denver team, which had been whipped by the awful Oakland Raiders the week before, tear up the Chiefs. Even Mitch Holthus had a hard time staying upbeat.
“Is anyone blocking anyone?”
| Holthus, disgustedly, on the Chiefs’ offensive line
“They (the Chiefs) are being shut down like Denver’s front four is the Steel Curtain....Who are these guys?”
| Gretz
“They (Denver’s front four) aren’t even known in Denver.”
| Dawson
“I think the Denver Broncos have finally turned the corner!”
| an overexcited Gus Johnson, CBS play-by-play man
JF: Really? The same Broncos who looked awful against Oakland the week before?
“The Chiefs continue to fight, but the Broncos are just too good!”
| Johnson
JF: The Broncos aren’t that good. The Chiefs are just that bad.
“It looks like Denver knows what every play is.”
| Dawson
JF: So does every Chiefs fan or anyone who’s watched the Chiefs play one quarter this season. You could fit the Chiefs’ playbook in a matchbox.
“Unsportsmanlike conduct...picking up props...15-yard penalty.”
| A penalty called on Denver’s Brandon Marshall, who picked up some snow and flung it into the air after scoring a touchdown.
“Aw, come on...let them have some fun.”
| CBS analyst Steve Tasker
“You know, you wouldn’t get that penalty if you were in Miami.”
| Tasker
“You wouldn’t get that touchdown if you were Miami.”
| Johnson
JF: This was no doubt the best exchange between Tasker and Johnson, who overall had a pretty rough day.
“This kid, Brady Croyle.....”
| Johnson, perhaps creating a mix between Tom Brady and Brodie Croyle
“It’s very important that Kansas City get some points here before halftime.” | Tasker
JF: Instead, the Chiefs ran a predictable running play on first down, even in their 2-minute offense. Two incompletions followed and the Chiefs punted. Denver, meanwhile, got the ball back deep in its their own territory and drove down for a field goal, much like real NFL teams do.
