JEFFREY FLANAGAN SOUND BITES
A peek in the halftime locker room could explain a lot about the Chiefs
By JEFFREY FLANAGAN
NFL locker rooms don’t open to reporters until a few minutes after the game is completed.
Maybe in Kansas City, the NFL should allow reporters to enter the locker room at halftime, just so we really know what possibly goes on in there during the intermission.
What could explain how poorly this team performs the minute the second half starts?

“Only four times have the Chiefs had a first down on their opening possession of the second half. They’ve been three and out nine times....This could be the most important moment of the game.”
| Mitch Holthus, Chiefs Radio Network, just as the second half was about to begin.
“Make that 10 out of 14 times they’ve gone three and out to start the second half. Another three and out.”
| Holthus
“Something happens to this team in the second half....Some good things happened in the first half.”
| Len Dawson, Chiefs Radio Network
“The Chiefs have no points in the fourth quarter in the last six weeks.”
| Holthus
“That’s awful...that’s when the game gets decided.”
| Dawson
JF: There are always juicy statistics when picking apart 4-10 teams. Sometimes they’re horrible first-half teams, sometimes they’re horrible second-half teams, as is the case with the Chiefs. But all bad meals basically come down to one of two things — a bad chef or bad ingredients.
•••
“Ah, goodness. We talk about special teams. But you drop a punt and give them three points. You kick the ball out of bounds for no reason. You get pinned down here. Special teams can kill you.”
| Dawson
“Eddie Drummond had the ball bounce off his shoulder pads. The Chiefs had the momentum...until that.”
| Holthus
JF: What exactly did the Chiefs see in Drummond?
•••
“There’s a reason the Chiefs are 4-9. Mistakes like that.”
| Ian Eagle, CBS play-by-play man, after Drummond’s second-quarter fumble
“Seven touchdowns and 16 interceptions for Vince Young this season. That’s poor decision making.”
| Dawson, before the game.
