THE MATCH-UP
Kansas City concludes the 2007 regular season with a road contest against the N.Y. Jets as Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards makes his initial appearance against his former squad. Edwards patrolled the sidelines for the Jets for five seasons (2001-05) and led that club to the playoffs three times, the highest total of any coach in that franchise’s history. Edwards led KC to the postseason in his initial season as Chiefs head coach in 2006, making him one of just five field generals in league history to take two different franchises to the playoffs in his inaugural season with that club.
The Jets also qualified for the postseason in 2006 under a first-year head coach as Eric Mangini guided New York to a 10-6 record and an AFC Wild Card berth. However, both the Chiefs and Jets have struggled in 2007. Kansas City is 4-11 and is attempting to snap an eight-game losing streak. The Chiefs are coming off a 25-20 loss at Detroit (12/23). Kansas City has won two straight regular season finales and hopes to make it three in a row. Edwards owns a 4-2 career mark in the last game of the regular season as an NFL head coach. The Jets are 3-12 on the year and enter this week’s contest following a 10-6 loss at Tennessee (12/23). New York has also won its last two regular season finales.
Chiefs nine-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez owns 813 career catches and can make history on Sunday. Gonzalez needs just three more receptions to bypass TE Shannon Sharpe (815) for the most catches by a tight end in NFL history. Gonzalez already owns the league record for TD catches by a tight end (66) and needs eight more receptions to register the second 100-catch season of his career (102 in 2004). He is also one game shy of tying Hall of Fame TE Kellen Winslow (24) for the most 100-yard receiving contests by a tight end in league annals.
DE Jared Allen (13.5 sacks) is the first Chiefs Pro Bowl defensive end since Neil Smith in ‘95. Allen needs just one more sack to join Smith, LB Derrick Thomas and DE Art Still as the fourth player in franchise annals with 14.5 or more sacks in a season. Allen ranks third in the league in sacks and is poised to post the franchise’s best sack total since Smith led the league with 15.0 in ‘93. Allen also owns a pair of TD receptions in 2007.
WR Dwayne Bowe (D1-07) has already established Chiefs rookie records with 69 catches for 982 yards. The LSU product needs just 18 yards to become the seventh NFL rookie since ‘90 to produce a 1,000-yard receiving season. He needs one TD catch to tie the KC rookie record of six.
THE SERIES
The Chiefs own a two-game edge in their all-time series against the Jets, owning a 17-15-1 (.530) record. KC owns a 16-14-1 mark in the regular season and has split a pair of playoff games with New York. The competition between these two original American Football League members dates back to ‘60 when the Chiefs were located in Dallas and known as the Texans, while New York’s AFL franchise was recognized as the Titans.
The Chiefs have won the last two games in this series. KC claimed a 27-7 victory in the most recent meeting between these two squads on Opening Day at Arrowhead (9/11/05). Kansas City ran the ball 34 times for 198 yards in the victory over a Jets squad that was led at the time by current Kansas City head coach Herm Edwards. The Chiefs also registered a 29-25 victory in the last contest between the two squads at Giants Stadium (10/6/02) as RB Priest Holmes produced the game-winning score on a 19-yard TD catch with less than 30 seconds remaining.
New York’s last regular season win against the Chiefs was a 27-7 victory at the Meadowlands (11/11/01) as RB Curtis Martin ran for 113 yards and three TDs. The Chiefs are 2-3-1 in regular season play against the Jets at Giants Stadium, where the Jets have played since ‘84.
These two original AFL franchises both own a long and distinguished history. Kansas City began its march to a victory in Super Bowl IV by upending QB Joe Namath and the defending World Champion Jets 13-6 in an AFL Divisional Playoff Game at Shea Stadium (12/20/69). The Chiefs would go on to defeat Oakland 17-7 in the final AFL Championship Game (1/4/70) before getting a 23-7 victory vs. Minnesota (1/11/70) in Super Bowl IV. New York won the only other postseason tilt between the two teams, getting a 35-15 victory in an AFC Wild Card match-up at Giants Stadium (12/28/86). KC holds a 5-2 edge in preseason action vs. the Jets. KC won the last preseason game between the clubs by a 19-10 count (8/10/91).
