Chiefs notes: LJ, Brackenridge on injured reserve
Two placed on IR
The Chiefs placed running back Larry Johnson (foot) and cornerback Tyron Brackenridge (knee) on injured reserve Wednesday to clear roster space for two additions.
The club signed offensive tackle Travis Leffew from the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad and elevated linebacker Mickey Pimental from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. The Chiefs filled Pimental’s spot on the practice squad with quarterback Jeff Otis.
The Chiefs are considering activating another quarterback, David Greene, from the practice squad, but he was not in camp on Wednesday because of a death in his family, and Otis ran the scout team.
Otis is the son of former NFL running back Jim Otis, who played for the Chiefs in 1971-72.
Croyle says he’ll play
Quarterback Brodie Croyle, still bothered by a hand injury, was limited in practice Wednesday, and Damon Huard took most of the snaps. But Croyle vows to be ready for Sunday’s season finale against the Jets.
Croyle said the swelling has gone down and he’s regaining feeling in the hand.
“I’ll be out there,” said Croyle, who has been receiving two hours’ treatment per day for the injury suffered when trying to make a tackle after throwing an interception last Sunday at Detroit. “I don’t know if they’ve cleared me yet, but I’ll be out there.”
Croyle has not second-guessed his decision to try to tackle Lions linebacker Paris Lenon, who returned the interception 61 yards for a touchdown.
“When you throw a pick, you’re mad,” Croyle said. “You want to try to do something …”
Jets’ quarterback status
The Jets face a similar situation at quarterback. Kellen Clemens, the Jets’ second-round pick in the same 2006 draft in which the Chiefs took Croyle in the third round, had made seven starts before he suffered injuries to his side and ribs against New England on Dec. 16. Veteran Chad Pennington played in Sunday’s 10-6 loss at Tennessee, but Jets coach Eric Mangini hopes to get another look at Clemens against the Chiefs.
“We’ll have to take a look at Kellen throughout the course of the week and see how his rehab is going, how the increased (work) have affected his rehab, and then make a judgment call at the end of the week,” Mangini said.
Injury update
Besides Croyle, offensive tackle Damion McIntosh was limited in practice. Linebackers Napoleon Harris (knee) and Donnie Edwards (groin) and wide receiver Eddie Kennison (ribs) did not practice and are questionable for Sunday.
The Jets had a lengthy injury list, too. Key players who were classified as “limited” were quarterback Clemens (ribs), defensive linemen Shaun Ellis (shoulder) and Dewayne Robertson (knee), tight end Chris Baker (back) and wide receiver Brad Smith (back).
Mirror seasons
The Jets, like the Chiefs, are finishing a disappointing season after reaching the playoffs last year in their first season under a new coach.
“Each year is so different, and you wish you could start right where you left off and start at 10 wins or nine wins, but it’s not the case,” said Mangini, whose team is 3-12 after a 10-6 season in 2006. “Every year is so unique, and you have to … do all the positive things you did the year before as well as improve and make adjustments.
“We’ve been in a lot of close games, and it came down to a handful of plays, and we didn’t come out in a positive side on a handful of plays. I know Kansas City has faced some similar situations. It’s disappointing, but the positive element is if you can get those things fixed, that you can turn those handful of plays around.”
Return of Herm
The Jets are gearing up for the return of Chiefs coach Herm Edwards, who was New York’s head coach during 2001-05.
“It will be fun,” said wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery. “A lot of players feel close to him. He has done a lot for this team. It will be good to have him back and see what his team can do. He has done a lot for a lot of players on this team and this organization. We know what type of coach and example he is for this league. He is a good opponent to go against in the last game of the year.”
