Not even OT could stir any excitement
By JEFFREY FLANAGAN
It was the last game of the season, and it was obvious that a year of bad and boring football had worn down the Chiefs’ radio announcers. Not even an overtime game seemed to stir much excitement.
Len Dawson and Mitch Holthus had a hard time holding back their disgust at the Chiefs’ hideous offense, from the play-calling to the poor execution.
Mercifully for everyone, the offseason is here for the Chiefs.

“This hasn’t been a very pretty first half, has it?”
| Dawson, Chiefs Radio Network
“Nope.”
| Holthus, Chiefs Radio Network
“Well, 2 minutes to go in this very exciting first half.”
| Dawson
“Do I sense some sarcasm in that voice?”
| Holthus
“Yes, you do. Eight straight games of this, of an inept offense.”
| Dawson
“This is pitiful, folks.”
| Dawson, after another Chiefs three-and-out
“All right! A first down!”
| Dawson, after the Chiefs’ offense finally converted its first first down with 7 minutes left in the half.
“That was awful. Just awful tackling.”
| Dawson, after the Jets scored their first-half touchdown
“Maybe that’s why the Jets have only three wins coming in …”
| Dawson, after the Jets messed up a potentially big play on offense.
JF: Lenny the Cool clearly was losing his cool with the poor play by both teams in the first half.
•••
“Herm Edwards has already taken a look at the draft and has said he doesn’t see a franchise quarterback there … Brodie Croyle is going to be his guy.”
| Solomon Wilcots, CBS analyst
“What an exceptional effort from Thomas Jones in overtime.”
| Ian Eagle, CBS
JF: Was it a great effort from Jones, or was the Chiefs’ defense just gassed? Or did the Chiefs’ defense lose interest?
•••
“Kansas City started this season 4-3 …”
| Wilcots
JF: Can anyone remember when the Chiefs were 4-3?
•••
“This game won’t end.”
| Eagle, after a holding penalty wiped out the Jets’ first winning field goal in overtime
“The thing that disturbs Herm Edwards the most is that this team doesn’t play smart football.”
| Bob Gretz, Chiefs Radio Network
JF: Hmmm. Doesn’t coaching have something to do with that?
•••
“They really haven’t challenged anyone deep down the field. Just dink-and-dunk passes.”
| Dawson, on the Chiefs’ feeble game plan
“The Jets left Dwayne Bowe all alone on that play. Why not? No one ever throws his way.”
| Dawson
“Have the Chiefs thrown to Bowe yet?”
| Holthus
“Is he even out there?”
| Dawson
“Eddie Drummond … I can’t imagine a kick returner having a worse year.”
| Holthus, after Drummond let a punt roll inside the 5-yard line
JF: The Chiefs’ coaching staff and front office sure loved Drummond, though.
•••
“First, he jumps offside, then he lets his guy straight through to the quarterback.”
| Dawson, on offensive lineman John Welbourn
“The Chiefs gave up two draft picks for John Welbourn.”
| Holthus
“Dustin Colquitt was struck a blow in an area where a gentleman does not want to be struck a blow … south of the border.”
| Gretz
“It should be very close! It all depends on the spot!”
| Holthus
JF: Really? It depends on the spot?
