Allen First-Team AP All-Pro, Gonzalez Earns Second-Team Honors
Jan 09, 2008, 3:20:01 PM
The Associated Press released its All-Pro Teams today with two members of the Kansas City Chiefs making the list. DE Jared Allen (D4-04) earned his initial selection to the AP’s first-team All-Pro squad after leading the NFL with 15.5 sacks. TE Tony Gonzalez (D1-97) earned second-team All-Pro honors, marking the seventh time in his 11-year NFL career that he has earned first or second-team All-Pro accolades.
Allen (6-6, 270) was the first Chiefs defender to lead the league in sacks since DE Neil Smith accomplished that feat in ‘93 with 15.0 QB takedowns. Allen’s six multi-sack games also paced the NFL in 2007. He became the first Chiefs defensive end to earn a Pro Bowl berth since DE Neil Smith earned a bid following the ‘95 campaign.
Allen now has 43.0 career sacks, the sixth-highest total in Chiefs annals. He needs 2.0 more sacks to overtake DE Eric Hicks (44.5) for fifth place in Chiefs history. En route to claiming the Chiefs MVP Award Allen also earned AFC Defensive Player of the Month honors for October, becoming the first Chiefs player to win that honor since LB Derrick Thomas accomplished the feat in December of ‘97. Allen finished his impressive 2007 campaign with 14 starts, amassing 67 tackles (62 solo), 15.5 sacks (-111.0 yards), three forced fumbles, 11 passes defensed and 18 QB pressures. He entered the NFL as a fourth-round draft choice (126th overall) in the 2004 NFL Draft.
Gonzalez (6-5, 251) established several NFL career records for tight ends in 2007. He has 820 career receptions and 66 TD catches, bypassing the previous marks at his position held by TE Shannon Sharpe (815 receptions, 62 TDs). Gonzalez has 9,882 career receiving yards and needs just 179 more to overtake Sharpe (10,060) for first place all-time among tight ends in that category.
Gonzalez is slated to make his ninth Pro Bowl appearance, the most by any tight end in league annals. He led the Chiefs in 2007 with 99 catches for 1,172 yards, becoming only the fourth tight end in NFL history to register three 1,000-yard receiving seasons. His 1,172 receiving yards led all NFL tight ends in 2007. The University of California product has caught a pass in 115 consecutive games, the longest streak in Chiefs history. TE Ozzie Newsome (150 games) is the only tight end in NFL history that owns a longer reception streak. Gonzalez has seen duty In 174 career games (158 starts) with Kansas City. He entered the NFL as a first-round selection (13th overall) in the ‘97 NFL Draft.
