Larry Johnson could have a stand-up comedy routine at gallery tonight
Want to see an encore performance of Chiefs star Larry Johnson doing his dead-on Herm Edwards impersonation? Or perhaps LJ just doing a little stand-up comedy?
Tonight could be the night. LJ may go on stage as part of “Late Night Laughter in the City,” an event honoring Black History Month at the Robert Frazier Gallery of Contemporary Art at 3120 Troost.
The event, which is being co-chaired by Johnson and city councilman Terry Riley, will feature an art exhibit and an open mike night hosted by comic Elliott Threatt.
“It’s my understanding that if Terry goes on stage, Larry has to as well,” said Carrie Stapleton of the public-relations firm Phillips-West, which is presenting the event.
“That’s the agreement between them. People probably don’t know that Larry is an artist as well, and we’re hoping he’ll have a piece of his art work to put on display there. (Former Chief) Pellom McDaniels already has two or three pieces at the gallery.”
Chiefs fans may remember when LJ stunned the local media back in 2006 by sneaking into one of Edwards’ weekly news conferences at Arrowhead and displaying a hilarious impersonation of Edwards, complete with the “play to win the game” rant and a few “Are you kidding me?” gestures for good measure.
One more time on stage tonight?
On second thought
Former Royals closer Ambiorix Burgos, now with the Mets, has had an unusual week at spring training. According to published reports, a bag containing $270,000 worth of jewelry was stolen from his room at the Mets team hotel.
The bag eventually was returned — but missing about $30,000 worth of bracelets, chains and watches.
Burgos told police that he had switched rooms at the hotel earlier this week and then noticed he was missing the bag Tuesday afternoon. After police interviewed hotel employees, a man happened to drop off the bag at the hotel’s front desk that night, saying he had found it outside.
The man then bolted from the hotel and drove off.
Chiefs’ Long shot?
Draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. on Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long:
“He became a complete player this year. He was a great run-blocker, destructive run-blocker, a better run-blocker than Joe Thomas of Wisconsin was last year. The consensus opinion this year was, ‘Will he be the pass-blocker he needs to be to become a (high-)quality left-tackle in this league?’
“He proved this year to be that. With his ability and aggressiveness, the team that would want him the most is Kansas City.”
