KU vs. MU: A recent timeline
Our timeline begins on the night of Nov. 24, when all Missouri fans felt on top of the world after a 36-28 victory over then-unbeaten Kansas. The next day, Mizzou’s football team was ranked No. 1 in the nation. But heading into tonight’s basketball Border War at Mizzou Arena, it is the Jayhawks who are on top.
Tigers vs. Jayhawks
•Nov. 24, 2007: Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Kansas quarterback Todd Reesing walks off the field picking grass out of his face mask after Missouri tackles him in the end zone for a safety. MU’s victory at what had been called Armageddon at Arrowhead gives the Tigers their first Big 12 North championship.
•Nov. 25, 2007: The Associated Press ranks Missouri No. 1 in its college football poll for the first time since 1960. Missouri fans point out their superiority to their Kansas “friends.”
•Dec. 1, 2007: Alamodome in San Antonio. Missouri is blown out 38-17 by Oklahoma in the Big 12 championship game. Kansas fans end week of mourning, point out to their Missouri “friends” that KU didn’t lose to Oklahoma. (MU fans point out KU didn’t play Oklahoma.)
•Dec. 2, 2007: The Jayhawks are selected to play Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl, a BCS game. MU fans scream foul and other four-letter words over MU being sent to the Cotton Bowl, a non-BCS game.
•Jan. 1, 2008: Cotton Bowl. Missouri blitzes Arkansas 38-7 as running back Tony Temple (left) sets MU bowl and Cotton Bowl records with 281 yards rushing and four touchdowns. Missouri records its first 12-victory football season.
•Jan. 3, 2008: Orange Bowl. Kansas beats Virginia Tech and its chest 27-24. Not belong in the BCS? Check out the scoreboard. Kansas records its first 12-victory football season.
•Jan. 5, 2008: Kansas basketball tries to take center stage with an 85-60 victory at Boston College. The Jayhawks now stand 14-0. Forget football. At KU, it’s basketball season. Finally.
•Jan. 7, 2008: The Associated Press final football rankings put Missouri at No. 4 and Kansas at No. 7. Missouri and Kansas fans each claim ultimate victory.
•Jan. 12, 2008: Missouri has been struggling on the hardwood. But out of nowhere, the Tigers batter No. 12 Texas 97-84 at Mizzou Arena.
•Jan. 14, 2008: Kansas thrills the home crowd by embarrassing Oklahoma 85-55 in Lawrence.
•Jan. 16, 2008: Missouri does a face plant at Iowa State, losing 72-67. Kansas fans start to salivate.
•Jan. 19, 2008: Missouri fans note MU has won two of the last three over KU in Columbia . Kansas fans contend that was then, this is now.
