Rush ties career-high with six assists in Kansas win
By RYAN YOUNG
The Kansas City Star
LAWRENCE | Maybe Brandon Rush’s six assists Wednesday will get overlooked in the box score of yet another Kansas romp.
Not by his teammates, though.
“He surprised me with a couple passes,” said Darrell Arthur, the beneficiary of two Rush assists. “He can impact the game in a lot of ways. Teams look at him just as a scorer, but he does so many things for the team.”
Like Wednesday.
Rush swapped downtown daggers for jaw-dropping dimes as his weapon of choice in Kansas’ 83-59 win over Iowa State at Allen Fieldhouse. Those six assists matched his career high, and he accomplished the feat by the second minute of the second half.
“He shocked me. He shocked everybody,” teammate Darnell Jackson said. “The pass he made to Shady, I was like, ‘Wow.’ ”
The particular pass to Arthur that Jackson mentioned was Rush’s favorite as well.
For his final assist, Rush started driving toward the lane before dishing a no-look pass to Arthur, who was all alone under the basket. Arthur had an easy layup and gave Kansas a 44-32 lead.
Rush, who shot a modest three of seven for 11 points, got so comfortable with the role of distributor that a couple of minutes later he tried a no-look pass over his head and behind him to the corner. No one was there to receive it, but the Jayhawks saved the ball from going out of bounds and scored on the possession.
Rush was able to crack a smile about that one after the game, while putting his night in perspective.
“I don’t know, I just got in that passing mode,” he said. “(I was) definitely not looking for my shot tonight.”
