Missouri has hope after Colorado win

COLUMBIA | Welcome to the theater of the seemingly absurd.
“As a team, we have goals,” said Missouri’s Matt Lawrence, fresh off a hard-scrabble 60-53 victory over Colorado.
“As coach Anderson says, we’re trying to win a national championship.”
Never mind that Missouri is merely 15-12 overall after completing the regular-season sweep of the Buffaloes on Saturday night. Never mind the Tigers are 5-7 and tied for eighth in the Big 12.
Hey, Kansas lost at Oklahoma State. Kansas State lost at Baylor. Texas A&M lost to Nebraska. The Big 12 is in chaos. MU assistant coach Matt Zimmerman, before MU’s victory Saturday, made sure to point out the possibilities to the Tigers with a message on a locker-room board.
“We’re one game away from fourth place if we win tonight,” Keon Lawrence said. “And if we lose, we’re one game away from last place.”
Sure enough, Missouri stands one game behind four teams at 6-6 in the league. Win home games against Oklahoma State and Iowa State and road games at Baylor and Oklahoma, the Tigers could finish at least fourth and earn a first-round bye in the Big 12 tournament.
“It’s crazy how everybody is just up and down in the Big 12,” Keon Lawrence said.
Win out, and a 19-12 MU team with victories over Texas, Kansas State, Baylor, Oklahoma and Purdue might not have to win the Big 12 tournament to get an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
That said, Keon Lawrence seemed to have a realistic handle on the woulda-shoulda-coulda scenario that ends in a national title.
“To get a national championship,” Keon said, “you’ve got to get in the tournament.”
