Police arrest MU guard Hannah in connection with nightclub incident

COLUMBIA | Stefhon Hannah was arrested Friday on the same suspicion of third-degree misdemeanor assault as Missouri basketball teammate Jason Horton was a week ago.
Sgt. Ken Hammond of the Columbia Police Department said the arrests stemmed from an allegation that Hannah and Horton assaulted the same Athena Night Club employee in an altercation outside the downtown Columbia night club in the first hour of Sunday morning Jan. 27.
Although charges have not been filed against either player, Sgt. Hammond said: “My guess is if they’re not filed (today) they’ll be filed on Monday.”
Hammond, an officer with the major case unit of the Columbia Police Department, said no further arrests were anticipated, despite Hannah having suffered a broken jaw that required surgery at University Hospital.
That is because the injury apparently was suffered when a fellow Athena employee acted in defense of his co-worker.
“That’s correct,” Sgt. Hammond told The Star.
After the fracas, which took place mere hours after the MU team returned from its only road victory of the season at Colorado on Jan. 26, MU coach Mike Anderson suspended Hannah, Horton and the three other players who were there in violation of Anderson’s midnight weekend curfew. The three others were not believed to be involved in the incident outside Athena.
Hannah had been in Chicago for the last 10 days staying with family after surgery at University Hospital in Columbia.
He returned to Columbia on Friday and met with an investigator from the Columbia Police Department major case squad but made no formal statement before being released on his own signature.
Anderson suspended Hannah, Horton, Darryl Butterfield, Marshall Brown and Leo Lyons for a Jan. 30 game against Nebraska. Lyons and Brown returned for a Feb. 2 game against Kansas State. All but Hannah played on Monday against Kansas.
Dave Reiter, assistant director of media relations for the MU athletic department, said Anderson would not comment Friday.
He said Hannah remained indefinitely suspended, a status that could be viewed as academic in that Hannah’s injury probably has ended his senior season at MU.
Reiter said Horton’s playing status, in light of both players facing the same potential charges, would have to be addressed by Anderson.
Missouri plays Texas A&M at 12:45 p.m. today at Mizzou Arena.
